This was a challenging commission. The client came to me with a very specific idea of what she wanted. The biggest challenge turned out to be getting the sconce finish to match (as close as possible) the gold leaf finish on the mirror frame. After fabricating the sconces from copper tubing and some brass fittings, I proceeded to work with some rattle-can spray paints. Nothing matched right out of the can so I had to start blending colors to simulate an antique gold finish. I did this by using three different paints. One was a color called “gold leaf” and it was great but way too bright. I toned it down by mixing in two different paints, both labeled “antique gold”. One was slightly darker than the other. I sprayed overlapping coats of paint in different isolated locations, sometime spraying two cans at the same time. After many, many, tries I finally achieved just the right combination and was able to repeat it on both sconces.
