This was a challenging commission. The client wanted the sconce finish to resemble the gold leaf finish on the mirror frame. After fabricating the sconces from copper tubing and some brass fittings, I proceeded to work with some rattle-can spray paints. Nothing matched right out of the can so I had to start blending colors to simulate an antique gold finish. I did this by using three different paints. One was a color called “gold leaf” and it was great but way to bright. I toned it down by mixing in two different paints, both labeled “antique gold”. One was slightly darker than the other. I sprayed over lapping coats of paint in different isolated locations, sometime spraying two cans at the same time. It seemed to take forever, way longer than I imagined it would, but I finally achieved just the right combination and was able to repeat it on both sconces.
