I started my crafts life with candle holders, oh so many years ago, and I thought it would be fun to try one again. I had the candle cups from a holder I made fifty years ago. The base was a really simple walnut disc with five holes in a circle for the stems to fit into. I loved the cups but was done with the walnut disc thing. I have a guy, another woodworker, who gives me lots of wood scraps for my wood stove in the shop. I salvaged this piece of spalted maple and saved it for an unknown future project. I tried it out for a few other things but this is the choice I made.

The cups are steel tubing with the bottom welded shut and the rest of it heated to puddling as the torch is purposefully moved and swirled. The stems are steel rods. They are adjustable and removable from the base. There are set screws set in the back of the wood base that locks each stem in place. All the metal then received a gun bluing treatment for patina. All I did was wax them. The finish was exactly as I did it fifty years ago. The flat surfaces of the maple base were sanded down to a 1500 paper and then oiled. After that it was waxed. I think it’s a nice blend of old and new.
